The Bangladesh Jewelers Association (BAJUS) has called on buyers to pay a 5% Value Added Tax (VAT) and a 6% making charge when purchasing gold ornaments.

Dilip Kumar Roy, former president of BAJUS and Chairman of the BAJUS Standing Committee on District Monitoring, made this announcement at a meeting in Mymensingh on Thursday.

He noted that many countries, including India, Sri Lanka, China, and Italy, have making charges ranging from 6% to 35%.

"In line with international standards, Bangladesh has set a minimum making charge of 6%. Additionally, customers must pay a 5% VAT on gold ornaments," Dilip said.

Speakers at the meeting stressed the importance of honesty in the jewellery business and the necessity of following BAJUS regulations. "Gold must be sold at prices set by BAJUS," Dilip added.
