With just one day remaining before Eid, holidaymakers have rushed to the capital’s Mohakhali bus terminal for tickets.

Visiting the Mohakhali bus terminal on Tuesday (9 April), home-bound people were seen standing in long lines for tickets at the counters.

Many people did not get tickets even after waiting in line since last night.

Garment worker Ayesha has been waiting at the Ena Paribahan counter since dawn.

However, till 10am, she did not get tickets.

“I got my leave last evening. I came here after Sehri time, there has been a long line since then,” she said.

Waiting for his bus to Naogaon, another passenger, named Mohsin Kabir, said traffic jams on the road are delaying the schedule.

“Every Eid we suffer like this,” he added.

Counter officials at the Mohakhali bus terminal said the number of passengers has been high since Monday (8 April) as the holidays begin.

They also said the transport companies are not being able to maintain time schedule.

Ekta Express Manager Shah Alam said, “12 of our buses are stuck on the road. More than 200 passengers are waiting.”

“We have enough vehicles. But it is becoming difficult to handle so much,” said an official of Ena Paribahan.

On the other hand, there have been complaints from passengers that many transport companies are charging extra Tk300-400 given the rush.

However, the transport workers said only black market tickets are being sold at higher prices than the government-fixed ones.

In this regard, Bangladesh Road Transport Authority Executive Magistrate Sajid Anwar said, “Our vigilance team is on duty round the clock. Any disruption to passenger services will not be tolerated.”
