The High Court (HC) has issued a rule asking the authorities of United Medical College Hospital to explain why they should not be directed to pay Tk5 crore in compensation to the family of five-year-old Ayaan who died after circumcision.
The court also instructed the Directorate General of Health Services (DGHS) to submit a report investigating the reasons responsible for Ayaan's death.
The High Court bench, comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Md Atabullah, issued the order on Monday (15 January).
On 31 December, Ayaan's family took him to United Medical College Hospital in the Satarkul area of Dhaka for circumcision. The surgery was performed by doctors who allegedly administered general anesthesia without permission.
Subsequently, the child was transferred to United Hospital in Gulshan as he did not regain consciousness under the effects of anesthesia. He was kept on life support in the pediatric intensive care unit there and was declared dead on 7 January.
Ayaan's father, Shamim Ahmed, filed a case against two doctors, unnamed officials, and a director of United Hospital and United Medical College Hospital at Badda police station on 9 January.
On Sunday (14 January), the health directorate ordered the closure of United Medical College Hospital.
