BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas on Wednesday dismissed the concept of a "second independence" in Bangladesh, stating that the country’s sovereignty and freedom were established in 1971 and do not need further validation.

Speaking at the National Memorial in Savar on the 54th Independence Day, Abbas emphasized that the idea of a second independence is an attempt to undermine the nation’s historic struggle for freedom.

He stated that those who promote this notion had no role in the Liberation War and are trying to diminish the significance of the country’s independence. He urged them to respect history and honor the sacrifices made for the nation.

Addressing concerns about national unity, Abbas said there is no real division in the country, only differing political ideologies and interests.

He explained that while each party follows its own ethical stance, the nation will come together if the need arises to protect its sovereignty.

Regarding the upcoming national election, Abbas expressed confidence in the chief adviser's announcement that polls would be held in December. He stated that BNP trusts this commitment and has no reason to change its stance.

He also highlighted the legacy of President Ziaur Rahman, who played a key role in the country’s independence. Abbas said Ziaur Rahman declared Bangladesh’s independence and fought for its freedom, and his contributions must always be remembered.

Reflecting on recent political developments, Abbas said that while Bangladesh has faced challenges in preserving democracy, the student-led protests on August 5 were instrumental in removing Sheikh Hasina from power. He concluded that the people of Bangladesh have once again freed themselves from autocracy and oppression.
