The High Court has granted bail to actress and former e-Commerce Association of Bangladesh (e-CAB) president Shomi Kaiser in an attempted murder case.
The bench of Justice Abu Taher Md Saifur Rahman and Justice Mohammad Showkat Ali Chowdhury issued the bail order on Tuesday, which will remain in effect until police submit their investigation report, according to Assistant Attorney General ABM Ibrahim Khalil.
The case was filed by one Ishtiaq Mahmud with Uttara East Police Station, accusing Shomi Kaiser and several others of attempting to kill him during the anti-discrimination student movement.
The High Court previously issued a rule asking the state to explain why Shomi should not be granted regular bail. After hearing the matter, the HC granted temporary relief, while the state has announced plans to challenge the decision in the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court.
Earlier, on 10 December 2024, Shomi Kaiser was granted three months of ad-interim bail following her arrest on 6 November. However, on 13 December, the Supreme Court's chamber judge stayed the HC order and referred the matter to its full bench for further hearing. The Appellate Division later extended the stay order and instructed the HC to dispose of the rule.
Assistant Attorney General Ibrahim Khalil stated that the state would appeal against the HC's latest verdict.
