Bangladesh has appointed Riaz Hamidullah, a seasoned diplomat, as its new High Commissioner to India.

Diplomatic sources confirm that the Indian government has recently approved the proposal put forth by the interim administration in Dhaka, paving the way for Hamidullah to assume his duties by mid-March.

The position had remained vacant for nearly five months following the recall of High Commissioner Mostafizur Rahman from Delhi in October last year.

A career diplomat from the 15th batch of the Bangladesh Civil Service (Foreign Affairs), Riaz Hamidullah is currently serving as secretary (West) at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Dhaka.

He previously held ambassadorial roles in Sri Lanka and the Netherlands.

His extensive diplomatic career includes serving as Director General of the Europe & European Union Wing and the Multilateral Economic Affairs Wing at the Foreign Ministry.

Additionally, he has been posted as Director at the SAARC Secretariat in Nepal and has prior experience at Bangladesh’s High Commission in Delhi.

Hamidullah holds a Bachelor’s degree with Honours in Economics from Aligarh Muslim University and a Master’s degree from Dhaka University.
