Mexico on Monday (17 February) cautioned Google that it was prepared to initiate legal proceedings if the company proceeded with renaming the "Gulf of Mexico" as the "Gulf of America" for users accessing Maps from the United States.
President Claudia Sheinbaum, addressing her daily press briefing, confirmed that her government had reiterated its firm opposition to the alteration in an official letter sent to Google.
Sheinbaum underscored that Mexico's argument against the proposed name change was based on territorial integrity, asserting that the executive order issued by US President Donald Trump on the matter solely applied to the American portion of the continental shelf.
"Google has no right to rename Mexico's continental shelf, nor does it have any authority to alter the designation of Cuba’s continental shelf, as the Gulf of Mexico is a maritime region shared by three nations," she declared.
She further emphasised that the letter made it unequivocally clear that "under no circumstances does Mexico accept the renaming of any geographic area encompassing its national territory or falling under its jurisdiction."
The warning sets the stage for a potential diplomatic and legal confrontation, as Mexico remains resolute in defending the historical and geographical nomenclature of the Gulf.
