Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of vandalism and violence in Dhanmondi 32 and across the country over the last two days, calling the situation a significant threat to democratic transition, good governance, and state stability. The anti-corruption watchdog criticised the government for its perceived indifference and inadequate preventive measures.
In a statement issued today (7 February), TIB Executive Director Dr. Iftekharuzzaman said, “Despite the announcement of violent programmes in advance, the law enforcement and security agencies, the government, have shown alarming indifference in taking effective control or preventive measures. The government later attempted to evade responsibility by stating that the incident was ‘unexpected and unintended.’”
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman emphasised the importance of effective governance in addressing such crises. “The government must take visible and effective steps to legally deal with any situation,” he added, urging all stakeholders to respect the rule of law and avoid destructive activities.
The statement also accused the government of exacerbating the crisis through its authoritarian practices. “There is no way to deny that during the authoritarian regime driven by the unlimited lust of partisanship and dynasticism, the most irreparable damage to Bangabandhu, the Liberation War, and its spirit was done by autocrat Sheikh Hasina and her cronies, who are accused of genocide,” said Dr. Iftekharuzzaman.
However, he cautioned against unlawful actions as a response to grievances. “The vindictive vandalism and violence that is going on across the country without following the path of legal reaction cannot be tolerated in any way. It will not send any positive message at home or abroad about a stable Bangladesh after the July uprising,” he stated.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman also highlighted the potential for further instability, warning, “The emerging situation is creating a fear of giving more opportunities to the circles that want to revive the fallen Awami League authoritarianism.” He called for a legal approach to ensuring accountability. “Ensuring exemplary punishment and accountability for specific crimes of all the accomplices of authoritarianism, including Sheikh Hasina, is the highest priority for fulfilling the dream of ‘New Bangladesh.’”
The TIB urged the government to break away from the culture of harassing dissenters and demonstrate tolerance. It called on all stakeholders to uphold democratic principles and avoid actions that could undermine state stability.
