The interim government has announced to sell pledged shares of Beximco Pharmaceuticals and Shinepukur Ceramics to pay the overdue wages of workers employed in 16 factories under the Beximco conglomerate.
The Bangladesh Securities Exchange Commission (BSEC) and the Financial Institutions Division (FID) will lead the initiative, aiming to complete the sale within a month.
Labour and Employment Adviser Brig Gen (Retd) M Sakhawat Hossain shared this information during a press briefing following a meeting of the Advisory Council Committee on Beximco Industrial Park at the Bangladesh Secretariat.
Sakhawat said, "Approximately Tk500-600 crore will be required to settle the workers' salaries and other dues, which will be raised by selling these shares."
He further stated that an investigation would be launched into how 16 Beximco factories in the textile and apparel sectors accumulated loans totaling Tk28,544 crore from 12 banks. The probe is expected to conclude by the end of February.
