The High Court has acquitted Gias Uddin Al Mamun, businessman and a close friend of BNP Acting Chairperson Tarique Rahman, in an arms case and overturned the 10-year prison sentence issued by the lower court in 2007.
A High Court bench comprising Justice Mustafa Zaman Islam and Justice Nasreen Akter delivered the verdict on Monday following an appeal filed by Mamun against the lower court’s ruling.
Supreme Court lawyers Saeed Ahmed Raja and Barrister Md. Sabbir Hamza Chowdhury represented Mamun during the hearing.
Gias Uddin Al Mamun was arrested on 30 January 2007, during the tenure of the military-backed caretaker government. Following his arrest, he faced charges in over 20 cases, including allegations of extortion, corruption, money laundering, and tax evasion.
The arms case against Mamun was filed on 26 March 2007, and he was subsequently sentenced to 10 years in prison by a judicial court on 3 July of the same year. Mamun’s appeal to the High Court ultimately led to his acquittal in the case.
Mamun, who has been in prison since his arrest, continues to face legal battles as other cases against him remain unresolved.
