A fire broke out at the Gola Chipa area on the western beach of St Martin’s Island in Cox’s Bazar's Teknaf upazila, reducing three resorts to ashes.
No casualties have been reported thus far.
The fire is believed to have originated from burning rubbish in the sand dunes, according to local sources.
The blaze started around 2:30am on Wednesday (15 January) at the Beach Valley Resort and quickly spread, engulfing the Shayari, Beach Valley, and Kingshuk resorts.
Residents initially attempted to control the fire before the Coast Guard, Navy, and tourist police managed to bring it under control after an hour and a half.
Locals said that the fire rapidly spread after igniting in Beach Valley Resort.
They suspect the fire started from rubbish burning at a nearby resort.
Another resident pointed out the absence of a fire service station on the island, which made the firefighting efforts heavily reliant on local residents, Coast Guard, Navy, and tourist police.
The fire was brought under control by 4am.
