The price of a 12kg LPG cylinder for consumers has been increased by Tk4 to Tk1,459 due to a rise in VAT. On 2 January, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) had set the price at Tk1,455.
On Tuesday (14 January), BERC announced the new LPG prices after adjusting for the VAT increase. The price per kilogram of LPG has been set at Tk121.56, up from the previous rate of Tk121.19 before the VAT hike. Additionally, the price of auto gas has been raised from Tk66.78 per litre to Tk67.27.
Although the price of LPG has decreased in the international market this January, the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC) initially kept the price unchanged due to the rise in the value of the dollar. The price of propane and butane has dropped by an average of 13.33 USD per tonne compared to December, which should have led to a reduction in price.
When the first price announcement was made on 12 April 2021 for import-dependent LPG, it was stated that the base price would fluctuate based on the Saudi price. Other components of the price would remain unchanged. Since then, BERC has been announcing LPG prices monthly. However, there have been complaints that the LPG sold in the market never matches the prices set by BERC.
