A student from Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET) was killed, and two of his classmates were critically injured after a car hit their stationary motorcycle on the 300-feet road in the Nila Market area of Purbachal in the early hours of today (20 December).

The deceased, Muhtasim Masud, 22, and the injured, Amit Saha, 22, and Mehedi Hasan, 22, were students in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) at BUET.

The accident occurred at around 3:00 am when a speeding car struck their stationary motorcycle while they were stopped at a police check post. Muhtasim died on the spot, while his friends sustained severe injuries.

Three individuals traveling in the car, including the driver, have been arrested. Police identified them as Mubin Al Mamun, 20, son of retired Brigadier General Abdullah Al Mamun of Mirpur DOHS; Mirajul Karim, 22, son of Rizwanul Karim of Mirpur’s Pirerbagh; and Asif Chowdhury, son of Bahauddin Chowdhury of Uttara Sector 13.

The trio underwent a dope test and was presented in court later in the day. Police recovered an empty liquor bottle and a beer can from the car.

Protest and Demands
BUET students staged demonstrations outside Rupganj Police Station in the morning, later organizing a rally at Palashi intersection near their campus in Dhaka. They condemned the incident as a murder and demanded justice, putting forward six demands.

The students' demands include ensuring the highest punishment for the ‘murder’ at any cost, making the defendants bear the full cost of treatment for the injured, and compelling them to provide adequate compensation to the family of the deceased Masud. They also urged taking legal action against any attempt to obstruct the investigation, providing full support from BUET authorities to help the injured return to normal life, and ensuring road safety to prevent further loss of life due to accidents.
