The Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) has issued a directive to all banks to submit detailed information about the bank accounts held by ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and her sister, Sheikh Rehana.
The central bank agency, in an order issued on Tuesday (10 December), stipulated that the requested account details must be provided within five working days.
In addition to seeking information on the accounts of the two daughters of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the founding leader of Bangladesh, the BFIU has also requested banks to disclose financial details related to the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Trust.
Sheikh Hasina's tenure came to an abrupt end on 5 August following a nationwide mass uprising led by students, which toppled the Awami League government and compelled her to flee the country.
Hasina, accompanied by her sister Sheikh Rehana and close aides, sought refuge in India.
Since their flight, the two sisters have reportedly been residing in a safe house located in New Delhi’s prestigious Lutyens Bungalow Zone.
This arrangement, according to reports from Indian media, was facilitated by the Indian government.
