Recent tensions in the relationship between Bangladesh and India have prompted the Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus, to seek India’s cooperation in fostering harmony.

During a meeting with India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri at the State Guest House Jamuna on Monday (9 December), the chief adviser expressed his concerns and outlined a vision for stronger ties.

Describing the bilateral relationship as “very robust” and “close,” Dr Yunus acknowledged that recent developments have cast a shadow.

The meeting also touched upon the contentious issue of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in India following her ousting.

Highlighting the concerns of Bangladeshi citizens, Dr Yunus remarked, “Our people are apprehensive as she [Sheikh Hasina] is issuing statements from there [India], which is causing unrest.”

He elaborated on the July-August public uprising, driven by students, workers, and citizens, that brought an end to Hasina’s 15-year rule, characterised by corruption and authoritarianism.

Dr Yunus emphasised his government’s priorities: "Our duty is to keep the dreams of our youth alive. This is a new Bangladesh.”

He provided an overview of the interim government’s reform initiatives aimed at fostering inclusivity and progress.

The chief adviser called for India’s collaboration in critical areas, including flood and water management, and urged a collective effort to revitalise SAARC.

“We aim to build a prosperous future for all,” he stated, urging for robust bilateral cooperation to address common challenges.

On the matter of minority rights, Dr Yunus affirmed the interim government’s commitment to safeguarding every citizen, irrespective of religion, ethnicity, or gender.

“We are one family. We must work together,” he concluded, underlining the shared vision of unity and progress.

The discussions mark an important step in Dhaka’s efforts to strengthen its ties with New Delhi and navigate a transformative phase in its domestic and international outlook.
