There have been allegations of an attempt to kill Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, the central coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, by running over their convoy with a truck on their way back after visiting the grave of lawyer Saiful Islam in Lohagara of Chattogram.
The incident took place at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday (27 November) at the Haji Road intersection in Chunati Union on the Chittagong-Cox's Bazar highway, said Lohagara Police Station Second Officer Momin Farhad.
He said, “We have seized the truck along with the driver in connection with incident and brought them to the police station. We are questioning him about the allegations of attempted murder. Details will be informed later.”
The police officer also said that coordinators Hasnat and Sarjis were not in that vehicle.
“However, it was their convoy. There were four people in the black private car, including the driver. One of them was Md. Ali Newaz, the student movement leader. The names of the others are not yet known,” said Momin
He added that although the front part of the private car was damaged in the incident, no one in the vehicle was seriously injured.
Meanwhile, shortly before 10:00pm, Chattogram coordinator Khan Talat Mahmud Rafi went live on Facebook.
He complained about the assassination attempt and wrote, "Our security is at risk. May Allah protect us. On our way back from visiting the grave of martyred advocate Saiful Islam Arif Bhai, an attempt was made to kill us by running over us with a truck at approximately 7:30 pm."
