The High Court has acquitted BNP’s acting chairman, Tarique Rahman, from a sedition case filed against him, effectively dismissing the charges.

Alongside Rahman, the High Court exonerated Ekushey Television’s chairman, Abdus Salam, as well as Mahathir Faruqi Khan, a former chief reporter, and senior reporter Kanak Sarwar, both from Ekushey Television.

The order was issued on Thursday (31 October), by a High Court bench comprising Justice AKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Syed Enayetur Rahman.

The case, originally brought in January 2015 at Tejgaon Police Station, accused Rahman and ETV chairman Abdus Salam of conspiring to broadcast false and misleading information, allegedly posing a threat to Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty.

The court formally framed charges in this case in 2017.

Notably, Tarique Rahman was previously acquitted of another sedition case filed in Noakhali, as the court dismissed the charges due to lack of evidence following testimony hearings.

This prior acquittal was issued on 21 August.
