The government has officially set prices for eggs at the producer, wholesale, and retail levels, with the changes set to take effect from Wednesday (16 October), said Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) Director General Mohammad Alim Akhtar Khan.

Following a meeting with egg producers and suppliers on Tuesday (15 October), he announced that from Wednesday, the price of eggs at the production level would be Tk10.91 per egg, at wholesale Tk11.01 per egg, and at retail Tk11.87 per egg. This translates to a consumer price of Tk142.44 per dozen.

In efforts to ensure compliance with the new pricing, the DNCRP has been conducting regular market inspections under the Ministry of Commerce.

However, these enforcement actions have resulted in some wholesalers in Tejgaon halting egg sales entirely.

Despite the inspections, prices in the market have remained largely unchanged.

In fact, some wholesalers have either reduced their egg sales or suspended them, leading to a supply shortage.

A survey of several markets in the capital revealed that farm eggs—both red and white varieties—are being sold at Tk180 per dozen, with prices reaching up to Tk190 per dozen in neighbourhood shops.
