The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock is firmly opposed to the export of Hilsa fish to India, according to Adviser Farida Akhtar.

Speaking to journalists at the Secretariat on Sunday morning (22 September), Adviser Akhtar clarified, "Our ministry prioritises ensuring that the people of our country have access to Hilsa, and we remain opposed to its export."

The Trade Ministry has, however, granted permission for the export of Hilsa to India. "This decision was made by the Trade Ministry, not us," she emphasised.

"Our commitment remains unchanged – we are against Hilsa export."

Dispelling concerns that exports would cause a significant price hike, the fisheries adviser stated, "While some fear the price will increase, that is not necessarily the case. There is an ample supply of Hilsa in the country. Last time, they [India] took fewer fish than anticipated. If any price hikes occur due to the news of exports, we will take action."

She also clarified that Hilsa is not traditionally associated with the Durga Puja festivities.

Furthermore, she announced that Hilsa fishing would be suspended from 13 October to 3 November to support breeding and increase production.

For several years, Hilsa has been exported to India during Durga Puja, though this year there was uncertainty.

On 11 August, Adviser Akhtar stated that exports would only take place after domestic demand was met.

However, on Saturday, the Trade Ministry issued an order approving the export of 3,000 tonnes of Hilsa to India.
