Begum Rokeya University (BRU) has suspended two teachers and seven officials in connection with the killing of Abu Sayed, a student who was shot dead by police during the anti-discrimination quota movement in Rangpur.
BRU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Showkat Ali announced the decision at a press briefing on Monday (28 October) following a Syndicate meeting.
Dr. Showkat Ali said that a case will be filed regarding Abu Sayed’s killing. In addition to the suspended teachers, 72 students found to be involved in breaching university rules during the incident will face disciplinary actions.
The Vice-Chancellor further explained that cases will be filed against former students involved, while current students will face both legal and academic penalties, including suspension.
Dr. Showkat Ali also said that, per university regulations, no teacher, officer, or staff member is permitted to engage in political activities. He acknowledged that such practices may have gone unchecked in the past, but assured that any future cases will be addressed in accordance with university regulations.
The Vice-Chancellor announced that the Syndicate Board has empowered him to temporarily suspend and reduce the salaries of any staff members absent in their duty without leave.
In response to student demands, Dr. Showkat Ali pledged to enforce ethical and academic discipline across the university. To achieve this, he announced a strict ban on extortion, dormitory seat trading, and factional student politics at the Begum Rokeya University campus.
