International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has alleged that bombs were planted in secret detention centres used during the previous Awami League administration in an apparent attempt to assassinate investigators probing the so-called Aynaghar operation.

“When we unknowingly entered one such centre, we discovered bombs — some equipped with timers,” Tajul told reporters on Sunday (6 April).

“It seems there was a clear attempt to assassinate those leading the investigation.”

He added that he had been personally present at the scene when the devices were found.

According to Tajul, investigators were also forced to clear heaps of rubbish from the sites before they could begin examining the suspected crime scenes.

The remarks were made as the ICT faces mounting criticism over the sluggish pace of trials related to the July uprising.
