Tulip Siddiq, former UK city minister and niece of Bangladesh’s former autocratic prime minister Sheikh Hasina, has been accused of misleading the British Parliament regarding her ownership of a flat in Bangladesh.
The Daily Mail reported on Saturday (5 April), that the controversy centres around a property registered in Siddiq’s name in Dhaka, which has since been seized by the Bangladeshi government at the request of the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
The flat, reportedly worth £600,000, is also subject to an ongoing investigation.
Siddiq, 42, has denied any wrongdoing.
Speaking to the The Daily Mail, she claimed she received the property as a gift from her parents in 2002 and legally transferred it to her sister Azmira in 2015, the same year she was first elected to Parliament.
However, according to the Westminster Register of Members' Financial Interests, Siddiq retained joint ownership of the property with a family member until June 2015. The following month, she declared that the transfer had been completed.
Yet, an investigation by The Daily Mail at the Dhaka Sub-Registry Office last week revealed Siddiq remains listed as the legal owner of the property—corroborating the ACC’s claims.
The matter is now under judicial consideration in Bangladesh to determine the rightful owner of the flat.
