Bangladesh welcomes Chinese participation in Teesta project

Both sides agreed to enhance cooperation in water management, climate change, maritime affairs, and trade expansion.

Bangladesh has invited Chinese companies to take part in the Teesta River Comprehensive Management and Restoration Project, reaffirming water resource cooperation as a major pillar of its strategic partnership with China.

The announcement came in a joint statement released after a high-level bilateral meeting between Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus and Chinese President Xi Jinping.

Both sides pledged to strengthen collaboration in:

  • Hydrological forecasting, flood prevention, and disaster reduction
  • River dredging and integrated water management
  • Technology sharing and water resources development

They also hailed the signing of the Implementation Plan of the MoU on Exchange of Hydrological Information of the Yarlung Zanbo-Jamuna River.

The Bangladesh-China partnership is also set to expand through:

  • China’s participation in the Mongla Port Modernisation and CEIZ in Chattogram
  • Early negotiations on a China-Bangladesh Free Trade Agreement
  • Accelerated exports of Bangladeshi mangoes, seafood, and agricultural products to China

Both nations reaffirmed their commitment to Belt and Road cooperation, industrial synergy, and shared modernisation efforts.

China reiterated its stance of noninterference in Bangladesh’s internal affairs and respect for its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Bangladesh, in turn, reaffirmed its commitment to the One-China policy, recognising Taiwan as an inalienable part of China.

Both nations agreed to expand maritime cooperation, including holding a new round of dialogue on maritime affairs.

The statement concluded with both sides reaffirming their equal commitment to a Comprehensive Strategic Cooperative Partnership, marking a new phase in Dhaka-Beijing relations.
