Eminent cultural personality and President of Chhayanaut, Dr Sanjida Khatun, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 92. She breathed her last at Square Hospital in the capital around 3 PM, according to family sources.
Dr Khatun had been suffering from age-related ailments for some time.
A distinguished scholar, she completed her bachelor's degree in Bengali literature from the University of Dhaka in 1955 and later earned a master's degree in Bangla language from Visva Bharati University in 1957. She went on to teach Bengali literature at the University of Dhaka.
A lifelong advocate for cultural and artistic expression, Dr Khatun was a founding member of Chhayanaut in the early 1960s, an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting Bengali cultural heritage.
During the Liberation War of 1971, she played a crucial role in establishing the Bangladesh Mukti Sangrami Shilpi Sangstha, which mobilized artists to inspire the freedom movement through music and art.
Her contributions to Bangladesh’s cultural and literary landscape will be remembered for generations to come.
