Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus has expressed optimism that Bangladesh's next government, to be elected through forthcoming national polls, will inherit a "very safe and sound" democratic foundation.

In an interview with NHK World, the international service of Japan's public broadcaster, on Wednesday (5 February), Yunus reflected on the progress achieved under the interim administration.

"Given the circumstances when we assumed office, I believe we have made significant strides. We inherited a society, economy, political system, and judiciary in a state of devastation," he remarked.

Describing the upcoming election as a pivotal step towards consolidating democracy, Yunus indicated that the earliest possible timeframe for holding the polls would be by the end of this year.

"Once the election is conducted, the newly elected government will have a secure and stable foundation to build upon," he affirmed.

The Nobel Peace Laureate emphasised his commitment to ensuring that Bangladesh emerges stronger and more resilient. He highlighted the influential role of the nation's youth in shaping its future.

"Young people aspire to unleash their creative potential and share it with the world. That ambition is at the core of our vision as we move forward," Yunus observed.

Expressing gratitude towards Japan, Bangladesh's largest development partner, Yunus acknowledged the transformative impact of Japanese technology and investment in creating employment opportunities for young Bangladeshis.

Speaking from the capital, Yunus detailed his vision for rebuilding Bangladesh following the collapse of Sheikh Hasina's administration last August amid widespread student protests, which ended her 15-year tenure in power.

Having assumed the role of chief adviser after the uprising, Yunus reiterated in a televised address to the nation on 16 December that the next national election is likely to be scheduled between the end of 2025 and mid-2026.
