China has announced its decision to supply medical equipment for individuals injured in the July-August period, alongside launching a project to establish a modern hospital in Dhaka.

The commitment was made by Chinese Ambassador Yao Wen during a humanitarian aid distribution event in Kaliakair, Gazipur, on Sunday (26 January).

The event was jointly organised by China and Jamaat-e-Islami, where food and winter blankets were distributed among the underprivileged.

Addressing the gathering, Yao Wen stated that the Chinese government had provided winter blankets and essential food items for the people of Gazipur, recognising the hardships faced by many due to the drop in temperatures. He expressed hope that the distributed blankets would offer relief during the harsh winter months.

The ambassador extended his gratitude to Jamaat-e-Islami’s leader for facilitating assistance to the people of Bangladesh. He also expressed his satisfaction upon visiting the Wami School, where numerous orphaned students receive accommodation and education through Jamaat’s support. Yao Wen highlighted that some of these students are now pursuing studies at Dhaka University. He assured that China would extend further support to the institution and invited orphans and teachers from the school to visit China to observe its way of life.

Emphasising China’s role in Bangladesh’s development, Yao Wen noted that China has over a hundred million Muslims and reiterated his country’s commitment to aiding Bangladesh’s progress. He affirmed that diplomatic relations between the two nations remain strong, with efforts underway to deepen bilateral ties. He also extended an invitation to the people of Bangladesh to participate in China’s upcoming national celebrations.

In his address as the chief guest, Jamaat-e-Islami’s leader, Shafiqur Rahman, underscored China’s longstanding support for Bangladesh, dating back to its formal recognition of the country post-independence. He highlighted China’s role as a key development partner since 1976, noting that the majority of Bangladesh’s major infrastructure projects have benefited from Chinese assistance.

Rahman particularly acknowledged China’s financial and technical contributions to Bangladesh’s longest bridge, a project that has significantly improved the lives of approximately 5.5 crore people in the southern region of the country.
