The Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV), first identified in northern China earlier this winter, has been reported in India's Karnataka state, prompting health experts to reassure the public about the virus's typically mild nature.

The virus, which manifests symptoms akin to influenza, is not considered fatal in most cases, health professionals stated, urging the public to maintain calm while following health protocols.

Following its detection in China, where warnings were issued, especially regarding its impact on children, the emergence of HMPV has raised concerns in neighbouring regions.

“This virus is similar to influenza. It has been in Bangladesh and is present globally. There is no need for undue alarm,” said Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) Adviser Mushtuq Husain.

While emphasising the importance of caution, he clarified that the situation in China, where a state of emergency was declared due to the influx of patients in emergency departments, follows their national protocol.

“HMPV is not typically fatal, but individuals with pre-existing conditions are at greater risk of severe illness,” he noted, adding, “Children and the elderly, as with influenza, remain particularly susceptible.”

To mitigate infection risks, he recommended practices such as regular handwashing, wearing masks, avoiding contact with symptomatic individuals, and consulting a doctor if symptoms worsen.

Additionally, the health expert suggested integrating HMPV into the influenza surveillance system.

“Incorporating HMPV in surveillance will enable genome sequencing, assisting in monitoring any changes in the virus’s severity,” he concluded.
