The National Emergency Service 999 received more than 1,200 complaints related to excessive noises caused by loud music, revelry, and fireworks during New Year’s Eve celebrations.

“Majority of the calls were received overnight, with 387 originating from Dhaka metropolitan areas and 798 from various parts of the country,” said Anwar Sattar, an official at the emergency service, on Wednesday (1 January).

“In each instance, the National Emergency Service promptly informed the respective police stations, ensuring attempts were made to address the issues reported,” he added.

Meanwhile, a separate incident occurred in Dhaka near LabAid in Dhanmondi, where a fire broke out in front of a supershop, reportedly caused by a sky lantern.

Although a firefighting team from the Mohammadpur Fire Station was dispatched upon receiving the information from 999, the blaze was extinguished by local residents before their arrival.

No damage or casualties were reported in connection with the incident.
