Home Affairs Adviser Lt Gen (Retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said the government is maintaining communication with both the Myanmar government and the rebel Arakan Army, which currently controls Myanmar’s side of the 271-kilometer shared border.

During a visit to the Teknaf border area in Cox's Bazar today (30 December), the adviser reassured that the border remains secure and that the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and other security forces are diligently performing their duties. “We have no problems in the border area. All security forces are working with utmost caution to ensure law and order remains stable,” he said.

The adviser highlighted the challenges posed by the current situation in Myanmar, where Rakhine State is under the control of rebel groups. As a result, Bangladesh is maintaining communication with both the Arakan Army and Myanmar’s military junta to navigate the complexities.

Addressing the recent influx of 50,000-60,000 Rohingyas fleeing conflict in Myanmar’s Rakhine State, Jahangir Alam Chowdhury stated that no decision has been made on their registration or potential asylum.

“The newly-arrived Rohingyas have faced severe humanitarian issues, with many arriving injured, making it difficult to send them back. They are receiving food assistance through various channels,” he explained.

The adviser noted that Dr. Khalilur Rahman, the high representative of Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, is closely monitoring the situation.
