Christmas festivities this year will proceed in a joyful and secure atmosphere, consistent with previous years, said the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP).
"No intelligence reports have indicated any threats, but the authorities remain highly vigilant," said DMP Additional Police Commissioner (Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime) Masud Karim after inspecting a comprehensive security drill at St Mary’s Cathedral in Kakrail on Tuesday (24 December).
Outlining the security arrangements, he stated that adequate numbers of uniformed and plainclothes police officers have been deployed at every church across the city.
In addition, specialised units, including SWAT teams, bomb disposal squads, and other tactical units, will also be on duty during the festive period.
“The army is currently supporting us and is also operational in the field. With everyone’s cooperation, Christmas will be celebrated in a thoroughly joyous environment,” he remarked.
Earlier at St Mary’s Cathedral, the Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s Counter Terrorism and Transnational Crime Division conducted a security drill involving SWAT teams, bomb disposal units, and canine squads to demonstrate responses to potential emergency scenarios.
Senior police officials, the father of St Mary’s Cathedral, and members of the press were present during the exercise.
