Mainul Islam, former director general of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), has been detained by Immigration Police at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka.

He was detained before boarding a foreign-bound flight to go in Canada along with his wife and child at 7:30pm on Tuesday, according to sources.

However, details regarding his detention couldn't be known.

Within 48 hours of the ruthless killing and BDR mutiny on 25 February, 2009, which claimed 74 lives, Mainul Islam was named director general of the BDR.

Later, he brought changes to the force's uniform and included an intelligence unit.

On 23 January 2011, Bangladesh Rifles was officially renamed as the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB).

Later, Mainul got promotion to the rank of Lieutenant General. He was also made principal staff officer of the Armed Forces Division in July 2015.
