Workers of an RMG factory in Gazipur staged a protest demanding their unpaid wages, blocking the busy Dhaka-Tangail Highway and causing immense public suffering due to halted vehicular movement on both sides.
The protest began around 9am on Thursday (28 November) in the Chandra area of Gazipur when factory employees refused to report to work, instead voicing their grievances about unpaid salaries.
Agitated workers later blocked both lanes of the highway at the Chandra Flyover, resulting in a severe traffic jam on the vital route.
Upon receiving information, police and military personnel arrived at the scene and attempted to negotiate with the workers to restore normalcy.
According to the protesting employees, the factory management had committed to clearing last month’s outstanding wages by 7 November. However, despite repeated requests, the payments remain unpaid, leading to widespread frustration among the workforce.
As of the time this report was filed, workers were continuing their blockade of the Dhaka-Tangail Highway.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) Rois Uddin of the Nawjor Highway Police Station said, "Vehicular movement on the highway remains suspended due to the workers’ blockade in Chandra."
Efforts to bring the situation under control and resume traffic flow are ongoing.
