US President Donald Trump has issued a fresh warning of slapping an additional 50% tariff on Chinese imports if Beijing fails to withdraw its newly announced 34% tariff on US products.
The warning, reported by CNN on Monday (7 April), comes amid a sharp escalation in trade tensions between the world’s two largest economies.
According to the report, Trump has set a deadline of Tuesday for China to comply with the demand. Should Beijing fail to reverse the tariff decision by then, the additional US levy is set to take effect from Wednesday (9 April).
“If China does not withdraw the 34% tariff by 8 April, a 50% tariff will be imposed on Chinese goods from 9 April,” Trump declared.
Notably, the tit-for-tat tariff dispute began on 2 April, when Trump unveiled a new tariff regime targeting Chinese imports, imposing a 34% duty under the banner of ‘reciprocal tariffs.’
In retaliation, on 4 April, China announced its own 34% tariff on American goods, with the country’s finance ministry stating that the measure would come into force from 10 April.
The spiralling tariff conflict marks a renewed phase in the ongoing US–China trade war, raising concerns over its potential impact on global markets and economic stability.
