A devastating road accident in Ethiopia has claimed the lives of at least 60 people and left four others injured. The tragedy occurred on the Gelana Bridge in the Buno Zuria Woreda of southern Ethiopia's Sidama Province.

According to reports published on Monday, (30 December) by Reuters and The Guardian, the accident and its fatal aftermath were confirmed by local health authorities.

Reuters, citing local officials via AFP, reported on Sunday that at least 60 people had lost their lives in the crash.

Meanwhile, The Guardian noted that the death toll could exceed 60, based on information from regional health officials.

Sidama Province, located approximately 300 kilometres south of Addis Ababa, is where the fatal incident unfolded.

The Sidama Regional Health Bureau, in a statement on Facebook, confirmed that 66 individuals had died in the accident.

However, further details regarding the circumstances of the crash remain undisclosed.

The bureau revealed that the incident occurred on the Gelana Bridge and stated that four injured passengers are currently receiving treatment at Buno General Hospital.

This tragic event underscores the urgent need for enhanced road safety measures in Ethiopia, as the nation grapples with the consequences of recurrent traffic accidents.
