Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has resigned from her position as the speaker of the parliament with her resignation letter submitted to President Mohammed Shahabuddin on Monday (2 September) as confirmed by sources at the Bangabhaban.
This resignation comes in the wake of the political upheaval that saw Sheikh Hasina resign and flee the country on 5 August.
Following Hasina's departure, President Shahbuddin dissolved the parliament, and an interim government was sworn in on 8 August.
Chaudhury's resignation comes 27 days after the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government.
She was first elected as Speaker on 30 April 2013, succeeding Abdul Hamid, who had been elected President. She had served continuously in this role since her appointment.
Following the 7 January elections, where the Awami League secured victory in a poll boycotted by the BNP, Chaudhury was re-elected as Speaker.
Since the onset of violence in the country on 16 July, culminating in the government’s collapse on 5 August, 760 people have lost their lives.
There have been ongoing cases against Sheikh Hasina and other Awami League leaders for their alleged involvement in shooting incidents.
Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury is also facing legal action.
On 27 August, a murder case was filed against her and 16 others, including former commerce minister Tipu Munshi, following the shooting death of goldsmith Muslim Uddin, 38, in Rangpur.
