Doctors across the country have declared a complete shutdown in response to the assault and humiliation of their colleagues at Dhaka Medical College (DMC) Hospital, demanding justice and assurance of security for medical professionals.

This announcement was made on Sunday (1 September).

Earlier that morning, doctors at Dhaka Medical College Hospital suspended medical services, citing concerns over their safety and demanding justice for the recent attacks.

The incident occurred on Saturday night when three doctors from the Department of Neurosurgery were assaulted.

In response, the doctors issued an ultimatum, demanding the identification and arrest of the perpetrators based on CCTV footage. They warned that they would go on strike if the culprits were not apprehended within 24 hours.

That same night, individuals injured during a clash between two groups in the Sipahibagh area of Khilgaon were brought to Dhaka Medical College for treatment.

Subsequently, members of the other group, armed with machetes, entered the emergency department of the hospital.

Four individuals were caught red-handed and handed over to the military by the hospital authorities.

Later, in a separate incident, relatives of a deceased patient vandalised the hospital’s non-stop emergency centre.

Fearing for their safety, the doctors suspended operations in the emergency department. Even before the 24-hour ultimatum expired, the doctors commenced their strike.
