It will be beneficial for all if elections are held within a reasonable time, said BNP.
"The interim government must conduct the elections while also working for the people. "If these tasks are completed within a reasonable timeframe, it will benefit everyone," BNP National Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury said while speaking to the media following a meeting between the party and Russian Ambassador to Bangladesh Alexander Mantytskiy at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan on Thursday (29 August).
"We have not mentioned any specific timeframe for the elections. We have merely indicated that everyone understands what constitutes a reasonable timeframe, and there is no need for further discussion on the matter," he added.
Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury further elaborated on the meeting with the Russian ambassador, describing it as a cordial discussion. He mentioned that the conversation touched on trade, energy, and investment between the two nations.
"We made it clear that the future relationship between Russia and Bangladesh is important, and the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) believes in maintaining good relations with everyone," Khasru remarked.
The Russian ambassador also inquired about Bangladesh's electoral system. In response, Amir Khasru stated, "We did not provide a specific timeframe for the elections. We expressed our support for the current interim government, its actions, and initiatives, and we are working together. The discussion also covered the ongoing reforms in government and constitutional institutions. Naturally, everyone is curious about the current and future stance, and that was the focus of our talks."
When asked whether the discussion included the allegations of corruption against the former prime minister in the Rooppur Nuclear Power Plant project, Amir Khasru responded, "BNP is not in power at the moment, so we are not in a position to pass judgment. Such matters may be discussed if the BNP comes to power."
The meeting was attended by BNP National Standing Committee members, including International Affairs Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Shama Obayed.
