Civil soceity platform - Shushashoner Jonno Nagorik (Shujan) - has proposed 19 reforms for overhauling the state system to the interim government.
The proposals were presented at a press conference organised by Shujan at the Dhaka Reporters Unity in Segunbagicha on Sunday (11 August).
Shujan Secretary Badiul Alam Majumdar said, “Following the fall of the government, there have been incidents of violence in many areas of the country. At such times, the highly biased law enforcement structure has completely collapsed. Immediate measures are needed to control the anarchy and ensure the safety of citizens' lives and property, as well as to restore law and order.”
He outlined the following recommendations:
- Amend the current constitution to facilitate state reform.
- Reform constitutional and statutory institutions.
- Revise the electoral process and electoral laws.
- Establish a neutral caretaker government.
- Reconstitute the Election Commission.
- Restore the functionality of Parliament.
- Ensure the independence of the judiciary.
- Strengthen local government.
- Implement a zero-tolerance policy towards corruption.
- Reduce economic inequality.
- Protect human rights.
- Empower women.
- Invest in youth and develop their leadership skills.
- Ensure quality education.
- Guarantee freedom of the press.
- Maintain environmental balance.
- Implement the Peace Accord in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and ensure the safety of minority communities.
- Reform political parties and change the political culture.
- Increase civic engagement.
