The United States is interested in strengthening its relations with Bangladesh, Prime Minister's Private Industry and Investment Adviser Salman F Rahman said.
“US wants to rebuild the trust," Salman F Rahman said after hosting the visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu at his home in Dhaka on Tuesday (14 May).
“We have talked about sanctions on RAB. Donald Lu said it was a matter for the US State Department," he added.
Donald Lu was accompanied by US Ambassador to Bangladesh Peter Haas, Chief of Staff of the Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs Nathaniel Haft, and three other officials.
The Bangladesh delegation included Law Minister Anisul Huq, State Minister for Commerce Ahasanul Islam Titu, State Minister for Information Mohammad A Arafat, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, former state minister for foreign affairs Shahriar Alam, retired diplomat Farooq Sobhan, and Dhaka School of Economics Chairman Quazi Kholiquzzaman.
When asked whether there was any discussion regarding BNP, State Minister for Information Mohammad A Arafat said, “No discussions on politics, human rights were held. Basically, the issues they want to work with Bangladesh have been discussed.”
The US delegation left Salman F Rahman's residence after dinner at 10:45pm.
Later, Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen said, “There was a fruitful talk. Both countries have agreed on bilateral cooperation.”
