Following the High Court order dated 19 February 2024, Ministry of Industries today submitted a list of more than hundred products already registered and some required to be registered at home and abroad as Geographical Indications (GI) goods of Bangladesh.
Confirming the report to newsmen, Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla, who filed and moved a writ petition, today also said the government has already hired a law firm in India to fight its legal battle there and move its plea to rectify the recent recognition of Tangail Saree as a GI product of India.
"I want to inform you that an Indian law firm named Mason & Associates will fight the legal battle for Bangladeshi Tangail Saree on Indian soil and plea to rectify the Indian recognition," she said.
A High Court division bench of Justice Muhammad Khurshid Alam Sarkar and Justice Sardar Md Rashed Jahangir on February 19 passed the order after holding hearing on the writ petition filed by Barrister Sarwat Siraj Shukla in this regard.
The court also issued a rule asking officials concerned including industries, the commerce secretary, agriculture secretary and cultural affairs secretary to explain in four weeks as to why it shall not declare their failure in preparing the list and register the GI products as illegal.
