Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam today said legal actions will be taken if Aedes mosquito larvae are found in any house or office in his area after 27 April.
"My message is clear: If we find larvae, you will be sued, jailed, fined and the amount of the fine will be significantly higher. The government and city corporation offices will not even be spared if mosquito larvae are found," said Mayor Atiqul.
He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of a month-long campaign programme on dengue prevention at Rupnagar of Mirpur today.
DNCC authorities have launched the month-long mosquito eradication campaign in 54 wards simultaneously from today in line with the recommendations of a technical committee of experts.
The Mayor called on city corporation residents not to throw away shells of coconut, polythene, packets of chips, cups of ice cream or cups of curd.
Each ward councilor of DNCC has been allocated Taka 50,000 for conducting awareness activities which include holding awareness processions, meetings at educational institutions, mosques and other religious institutions and distributing leaflets to make the people aware.
Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, MP, DNCC Chief Health Officer Brigadier General Imrul Kayes Chowdhury, Infectious Disease Specialist Be-Nazir Ahmed, Entomologist Professor Kabirul Bashar, Ward No. 7 Councilor Tofazzal Hossain were also present on the occasion.
After the meeting, a procession was brought out with the ward residents which ended on the main road of Rupnagar after marching road No. 23 of Rupnagar residential area.
