A renewed outbreak of violence between students from Dhaka College and Dhaka City College brought parts of the capital to a standstill on Tuesday (22 April), as groups clashed with brickbats and chased each other through the streets of Dhanmondi.
The confrontation erupted around midday, when tensions escalated into physical violence, forcing a suspension of traffic in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported scenes of chaos as rival student groups engaged in running battles, with projectiles hurled near the gates of City College.
According to students from Dhaka College, the violence stemmed from an incident the previous day, when one of their peers was allegedly assaulted in Dhanmondi by several unidentified youths—one of whom was reportedly a City College student.
They claim the attack was rooted in a longstanding personal dispute. The injured student has since been admitted to hospital.
In retaliation, a group of Dhaka College students gathered in front of City College on Tuesday, prompting City College teachers to intervene.
Despite efforts to defuse the situation, students began pelting the college entrance with stones, further escalating the disorder.
No casualties have been reported so far.
This is not the first such confrontation between the two institutions. On 15 April, students from both colleges engaged in a similar altercation near the Science Laboratory intersection, leaving several injured.
New Market police station officer-in-charge Mohsin Uddin stated that tensions between the two colleges have persisted for some time, exacerbated by disputes over social media posts.
He confirmed that additional police personnel had been deployed to restore order, and efforts were ongoing to disperse the students and return them to their respective campuses.
