On 10 April 1972, the United States, the Soviet Union and seventy other nations signed the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC), the first multilateral disarmament treaty banning the development, production and stockpiling of biological and toxin weapons.

While enforcement mechanisms remained limited, the agreement marked a significant step in global efforts to prevent the use of weapons of mass destruction and set a precedent for future arms control treaties.
