Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus has vehemently condemned the recent mob attack on a bookstall at the Ekushey Book Fair, describing it as an affront to the fundamental rights of Bangladeshi citizens and a blatant violation of the country’s legal principles.
In an official statement issued by the press wing on Tuesday (11 February), the chief adviser denounced the violence, underscoring that such acts are antithetical to the open-minded ethos of the book fair, an event that pays homage to the language martyrs of 21 February 1952.
The Ekushey Boi Mela, a treasured cultural institution, stands as a vital forum for writers, readers, and intellectual discourse, he added.
The interim government has directed both the police and Bangla Academy to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and to ensure that those responsible are swiftly brought to justice.
In response to the attack, security measures at the fair have been significantly bolstered to forestall any recurrence of such incidents. Law enforcement agencies have also been instructed to adopt stringent measures against any manifestations of mob violence across the country.
Authorities reiterated their unwavering commitment to maintaining public order and safeguarding the well-being of all visitors, authors, and publishers participating in the book fair.
