Interim govt condemns any form of custodial torture, murder: Statement

The interim government has ordered an urgent investigation into the death of Touhidul Islam, Chief Adviser's Deputy Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad Majumder said on Saturday.

Md Touhidul Islam, 40, died in Cumilla Medical College Hospital on 31 January 2025, hours after being arrested in a joint force operation in Adarsha Sadar Upazila, Cumilla. Rahman was detained at approximately 3:00 am on specific allegations and passed away at 12:30 pm the same day. 

The camp commander involved in the operation has been immediately removed from their post, and a high-ranking committee has been formed to determine the cause of death.

Legal action will be taken against any individuals found responsible in accordance with military law.

The interim government, led by Prof Muhammad Yunus, absolutely condemns any form of custodial torture and murder, Azad said in a statement on behalf of the CA's press wing.

The government, which includes prominent human rights activists, has made the protection of human rights a core priority. Several commissions have been established to reform the nation’s criminal justice system, and many have already submitted their reports.

The Interim Government has vowed to engage in meaningful dialogue with political parties regarding these reforms, to eliminate opportunities for human rights abuses within police interrogations, crime management, and judicial procedures. The government remains committed to implementing these crucial changes.
