India's Adani Group has issued a fresh letter to the Bangladesh Power Development Board (BPDB), urging the settlement of outstanding electricity bills amounting to $845 million (Tk8,450 crore) by June this year.

The letter also proposes a waiver of late fees if the total outstanding amount for the period up to December 2024 is cleared by 30 June.

Previously, Adani had set a deadline in a letter dated 7 November last year for the payment of pending electricity bills.

At that time, electricity exports from an 800-megawatt unit were also suspended.

In the letter sent to BPDB on 19 January, Adani reiterated that BPDB owes them $845 million for electricity supplied up to 6 January.

Adani warned that failure to pay within the stipulated time would result in the application of late fees as per the agreement.

However, BPDB's calculations indicate that the outstanding amount is closer to $700 million (Tk7,000 crore).

A meeting was held between Adani and BPDB on 9 January to address the issue of outstanding electricity bills.

The formal letter from Adani Group, signed on 16 January, references the discussions held during this meeting.

Adani highlighted in the letter that the unpaid dues are causing liquidity problems for their Godda power plant.
