Khaleda Zia, Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), and the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman have no legal barriers preventing their participation in the forthcoming national elections, stated Attorney General Asaduzzaman.

He made the remarks on Friday (27 December), while addressing a shadow parliament organised by Debate for Democracy as the chief guest.

The attorney general clarified, “Those convicted, including Sheikh Hasina and other leaders of her party, will not be eligible to contest the upcoming general elections. However, with all cases against Khaleda Zia and Tarique Rahman resolved for now, there are no legal hurdles to their participation in the next elections.”

He further added, “As per the previous Representation of the People Order, electoral offenders will face trial. Ensuring justice for past electoral crimes is essential for making future elections credible and acceptable.”

The shadow parliament, featuring participants from Eastern University and Bangladesh University, was presided over by Debate for Democracy Chairman Hasan Ahmed Chowdhury Kiron.
