Police have arrested a man on charges of killing a fishing cat in the Naldanga Bazar area of Kaliganj Upazila in Jhenaidah on Saturday.
The arrestee is Jahidul Islam, said sources at Forest Department of Jhenaidah.
It was reported that Jahidul Islam killed the fishing cat and hung it on the back of an electric rickshaw.
On 19 December, a video surfaced on social media showing the fishing cat next to statements disrespecting freedom fighters. After noticing the incident, members of the Forest Department visited the site, confirmed the facts through discussions with locals, public representatives, and wildlife conservation enthusiasts, and verified the authenticity of the crime.
Jahidul Islam had been involved in wildlife killings in the past, claimed the Forest Department adding that based on evidence, a general diary (GD) has been filed against him.
Legal proceedings under Section 34(b) of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Act, 2012, are currently underway against him, said the Forest Department adding that they emphasize that strict legal action against wildlife killers will continue.
