Section 144 has been imposed across Tongi’s Ijtema grounds in Gazipur and a three-kilometre surrounding area, as announced in a statement signed by Gazipur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Najmul Karim Khan on Wednesday (18 December).
According to the statement, issued under Sections 30 and 31 of the Gazipur Metropolitan Police Act 2018, the restrictions came into effect at 2:00 pm on 18 December 2024 and will remain in place until further notice.
The directive bans all forms of public gatherings, including rallies, processions, and protests, within the specified area.
The decision follows a violent clash between followers of Maulana Zubair and Maulana Saad Kandhalvi over control of the Tongi Ijtema grounds, resulting in three fatalities.
In response, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has extended the prohibition of gatherings to areas such as Kamarpara, Abdullahpur, Uttara Sector 10, and parts of the southern and western banks of the Turag River.
The statement also warned that legal action would be taken against those violating the restrictions.
Commissioner Najmul Karim Khan stated, “Section 144 has been enforced to ensure law and order in the metropolitan area.”
