The Appeals Division of the Supreme Court, led by Justice Ashfaqul Islam, has upheld a High Court verdict cancelling five labour law cases filed against Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.
On Sunday (8 December) the bench dismissed a leave-to-appeal petition submitted by the state, cementing the High Court’s prior decision.
As a result, the cancellation of the proceedings for the five cases will remain effective.
Earlier, on 24 October, the High Court annulled proceedings in these five labour law cases alongside a defamation case.
The labour law cases trace back to 3 July 2019, when three former employees of Dr Yunus’s organisation, Grameen Communications—Abdus Salam, Shah Alam, and Emranul Haque—filed suits against him and two others at the Third Labour Court in Dhaka.
Subsequently, two more individuals, Hossain Ahmed and Abdur Gafur, also initiated similar legal actions the same year.
Seeking relief from these cases, Dr Yunus moved the High Court in 2020, which issued a rule concerning their cancellation.
Following separate hearings, the High Court delivered its verdict on 24 October, favouring Dr Yunus and invalidating the proceedings.
This latest decision by the Supreme Court reinforces the High Court’s judgment, effectively nullifying the labour law cases against the Nobel laureate.
